In the 1930s, black architect Paul Williams was commissioned to build a compound in Rustic Canyon by a Hollywood movie star couple turned Nazi sympathizers anticipating a German victory in World War II. At the skirt of the Pacific Ocean, the barracks, generators, and strongholds of the tourist-christened “Murphy’s Ranch” produce new life from cocoons of rubble, buried in layers of spray paint and wreaths of poppies.
This series of wide-screen paintings examines how people project their mindset onto their environment. Painted in aspect ratios similar to film, the work seeks to elevate the subjects' points of view and convey the sense of grandeur one attributes to one's personal perspective. Each environment is depicted using a mixture of formal space and abstraction to manifest the mental spaces of the subjects.
